Blog Number Five: Racial Diversity

Modern Family is an excellent example of a television show with racial diversity.

In the television series, Modern Family, there are characters of many different races. This reflects gender and racial diversity in many ways. The diversity ranges from a gay couple that is raising an adopted Chinese daughter, to a Latina woman who is married to an older gentleman. Some critics argue that the series is mocking the Latin culture by putting her in a strange position, but her Latino son is a smart young man who is also shown in a positive light. This type of diversity is important in the media because it shows the progress media is taking in television shows. It also makes abnormal situations become normalized much quicker.

Further more, each character represents a different stereotype made in America. However, these stereotypes are not portrayed in a dim light. For example, the two daughters in the families are in high school. One of them is a bookworm, and the other is obsessed with boys and fashion. Neither of these stereotypes is bad, it actually shines a light on them, because their lives have their own ups and downs. It is meant to show families that it is normal if they have one child or the other. It also shows young woman that it’s okay to be that bookworm or the fashionista, because they both end up with good opportunities. These are good examples of stereotyping and portraying them in a positive light.
