Blog Number Three: Semiotic Analysis

Television Ad: 


Denotation:

  • Victoria’s secret models in different cities around the world wearing lingerie
  • Models are dressed as angels
  • Models of different races
  • Romantic song played in the background
Connotation:

  • If you wear Victoria’s secret lingerie, you will look or feel like the models
  • For the males, they should buy their significant other items from Victoria’s Secret
  • Romantic theme to make the viewer in the mood for love
  • Victoria’s secret popular all around the world

Outdoor Billboard Ad:

Denotation:

  • Four girls, two guys
  • All white with brunette hair
  • At the Clippers Stadium
  • Men wearing suits and ties
  • Woman wearing fancy dresses of this era.
  • All the dresses are puffy from the waist down
  • 2 girls wearing pink dresses, one girl wearing yellow/gold dress and middle girl wearing green dress
  • Vintage background with green/ blue walls
  • 4 paintings in the background
  • 2 girls with bored look, other two girls laughing with each other
  • Bottom right corner, “Happily Whatever After” “GIRLS” “A special two part premier SUN, JAN 12 10PM HBO”
Connotation:

  • All four girls are friends, the two bored looking ones probably are annoyed with the other two girls
  • Only girl looking at the camera is the one in the middle, Lena Dunham. She is portrayed as the main character.
  • Boys look suspicious, with a smirk on their faces. 
  • Foreshadowing the season coming.




Magazine Ad:

Denotation:
  • Causation red head in the middle of the cover of "Health" magazine
  • Showing off her curves and her body
  • Floral tan and purple dress
  • Sayings around her are all related to looks and weight loss
Connotation:
  • The magazine is using her as a good example to women that if they read it, and follow the steps, they can potentially look like her.
